First I observe and use standardized testing to determine the student’s particular areas of difficulty and strength, and plan custom, enjoyable lessons with the perfect level of difficulty to target areas of difficulty while using student strengths to achieve growth. When students experience continuous improvement, their confidence, knowledge and skills blossom.

Some of the components of reading that I assess:

• Phonemic awareness - sounds and sound combinations, rhyme
  
• Letter combination sounds (ough = oo / off/ uff  –  through, cough, rough)
• Eye tracking – how many letters the eyes focus on, if the eyes are skipping
  over the beginning, middle or end of a word and how eyes move over the lines
• Chunking syllables
• Fluency - reading smoothly with expression
• Comprehension (thought process during reading)
  
• Retention / memory
  
• Vocabulary
• Concept Development
